At this time of Thanksgiving, it is important to take some time to express gratitude for the people that have touched our lives in so many ways. Our family and friends have helped us develop into the person we are today.  As educators, we are thankful for our students, our mentors and our supportive parents. As DKG members we are thankful for the friendships that we have formed that reach across the borders and the many benefits we reap as a member of the Society.  As an employee of Delta Kappa Gamma, I am also grateful to my colleagues who are so dedicated to our members and the work of the Society. So on this special holiday, I want to to extend a heartfelt thank you to each of you. You have touched my heart in a special way!

Have you ever wanted to travel to Ireland, Scotland and England?  Well, don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity that is now available to DKG members, their friends and family. Some have wanted to take a trip like this, but felt nervous about taking it alone.  This exciting adventure gives you an opportunity to develop new friendships with other DKG members throughout the Society. Congratulations to our newest chapter in Texas!  Four transfer members, two reinstated members and twenty-seven new initiates formed Nu Alpha.  This chapter has been sponsored by Alpha Chapter in Texas.  Many gathered in the Leander/Cedar Park area to celebrate the installation of the chapter.  How exciting to see growth happening!  It is our responsibility as members of DKG to honor key women educators with the gift of membership.  Have you recently honored an educator in your community?

This wonderful marketing tool includes information about the association and the benefits of membership.  The only cost is shipping and handling.  The brochures are free to members.  Share your DKG pride and honor local educators with the gift of membership.

Do you shop around when looking for the best insurance?  What is important to you when you look at different insurance programs? A new year will bring exciting changes and new beginnings for many. We are looking to  

showcase your most successful chapter project in a new display at Society Headquarters.  Send a picture (jpeg file, please) with a one line descriptive caption to societyoper@dkg.org.  Please include your name, chapter name and state organization.  With this new addition, visitors to headquarters will enjoy sharing in the achievements of DKG members the past 85 years, today and beyond.

As you enter DKG Society Headquarters in Austin, Texas, you will see a beautiful holiday tree that is decorated with ornaments from our 78 state organizations representing 17 countries. This is one of the beautiful items in the entry that adds an international spirit to our holiday celebrations.

Congratulations to 37 DKG State Organizations who reported 100% of their chapters and coordinating councils as filing their IRS 990 for the July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014 fiscal year.  To see a full list, check out the Society website at www.dkg.org . Great job!!!

On December 5, I attended the 50th celebration of Blanton Elementary School.  It is a pre-k through 5th grade school in Austin, Texas.  It was an exciting event attended by parents, teachers, school personnel, students and some DKG members. One DKG member dressed up as Dr. Annie Webb Blanton and shared her story in both English and Spanish.  The school was alive with active students and parents.  Dr. Blanton would have been very proud!

You never know when you may meet an early career educator who evidences a potential for distinctive service in the field of education. When my nephew came to visit, we took a tour of the University of Texas football stadium.  It was fabulous! What made it even more enjoyable was a student that was giving part of the tour. Her enthusiasm glowed.  In conversation, I found out that she would be graduating in December with a double major.  She hoped to be teaching soon.  I, of course, spoke to her about Delta Kappa Gamma.  I invited her to check out our website and think about coming to Society Headquarters for a visit. She did.  We had a wonderful visit!  Her hopes and dreams for the future were inspiring.  She plans to empower young girls and hopes to open her own school.  Everything she learned about Delta Kappa Gamma excited her and she felt it would be an honor to be considered for such a wonderful organization.  We will keep in touch!  My message to you today is to  think openly and positively as you meet the future leaders of tomorrow. Your encouragement may help their dreams become a reality.

There is much excitement in the air as we complete the final touches for the 2014 DKG International Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.  I hope your bags are packed and you are ready to go!  Make sure to leave a little room in those suitcases for some of the fabulous bargains that you be sure to find in the Marketplace this year.  We have many vendors and exhibitors that will be traveling to Indianapolis for our big event. You will also have an opportunity to meet many authors who will be selling their books.  I'm sure they will even authograph their personal treasures.  The Marketplace will be located in Griffin Hall.  The hours will as follows:

It is never too early to start searching for additional funding for state organization conferences and conventions. Members in Sweden are busy preparing for the 2015 Europe Regional that will be held in Boras.  They received a grant from The Swedbank in Boras to be used for the 2015 Regional Conference.  Pictured above is Monica Tengling, member of the steering committee along with chapter president, Agneta Lundberg.  The person in the middle is the past mayor of Boras, Maj Steen, who is an honorary member of Chi chapter.

As many may not know, our founder, Dr. Annie Webb Blanton in buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Texas.  Burials began in this cemetery in 1839 and it is the oldest of five city owned cemeteries. A non-profit organization called Save Austin's Cemeteries was founded in 2004 to preserve historic cemeteries in Austin through documentation and education, and to promote historical cemeteries of Austin as local and state cultural resources. I had heard recently about an exciting project this organization was spearheading.
After a recent committee meeting, I brought two of our members over to the gravesite of Dr. Blanton.  It was so exciting to see that next to her grave was a stand with a picture of her and a QR code.  When I scanned the QR code her picture came up as well as some history of her accomplishments.  It was very exciting to see that Delta Kappa Gamma was mentioned in the brief story.  It is amazing where technology can take us!!!

Congratulations to all the U.S. state organization treasurers for seeing that the IRS Form 990 was filed for the 2012-2013 fiscal year! We have received verification from 100% of our U.S.state organization treasurers  Hats off to the treasurers for staying on top of this legal obiligation for our organization!!!

Have you set some 2014 goals for yourself? Will you be successful?  One of the goals that I had set for myself in 2013 was to learn how to do a Prezi.  Do you know what that is?  Many of us have used various types of formats for presentations.  I often use power point when making a presentation.  Well, this is another tool that can be used.  I decided to try it and prepare a Prezi for some of the 2013 regional conferences.  It was called "Let Your DKG Pride Shine Forth In Your Community." This creative tool allowed me to present the material in a vibrant, moving format right from my iPad. The workshops were filled with eager members who had never seen this type of presentation. It was a very exciting and beneficial topic that was enhanced by use of a Prezi.  I encourage you all to try it. Let me know how it goes!

On the Society website www.dkg.org , complete Form 43 and send in your donation.  Remember we are leading women educators impacting education worldwide.  We continue to touch the lives of many.

Keep in mind that contributions to these funds are tax-deducatible to the fullest extend of the law in the USA and in some other countries.

Have you been asked to produce an insurance waiver for one or two million dollars of coverage in order to have a meeting at a specific school or location? Many chapters have inquired about general liability insurance.  This type of insurance protects the chapter and the members from law suits, if someone is injured at an event where the chapter or individuls are help responsible.  Events can include general meetings, dinners, service projects, and more. The Society does not have this type of insurance to cover all state organizations and chapters, but we do have a partnership with Association Insurance Management, Inc. (AIM).  AIM will offer you competively priced group rates. Check out their website to see if this would be a good option for your to consider.

2013 Southeast Regional Regional Conference

There is a new twist to the info fairs at each of the DKG Regional Conferences this year. Make sure you visit the info fairs. The experience will be innovative, exciting and informational. The SE representative on the International Scholarship Committee was very creative following the "Special Effects" theme of the conference.
